Obituary of Bruce Richard Mitchell
October 15, 1952 – March 17, 2020
Bruce suffered courageously his battle with cancer and succumbed peacefully at his parent's home.
Bruce is survived by his parents Marg and Bill Makins of Clinton, Ontario, and his brother David of Glenmorris, Ontario. He was predeceased by his only sister Jane and his biological father Clarence Mitchell. Also survived by several nieces and nephews, many cousins, his uncle Jim Sherk and Aunt Gail, of Ayr, Ontario, and his uncle Dr. John Kostuik of Florida.
Bruce was educated at public school in Ayr, high school in Galt, and later as an adult he returned to school attending university in Toronto and Calgary where he achieved his Bachelor of Science degree with an over 90% honour role.
Bruce called Alberta “home” for at least 30 of the last 40 years, making many fast friends there but never forgetting his life long friends in Ontario.
Bruce was the “adventurous” sort and those adventures started early for him: ie. playing hooky from kindergarten with his cousin !! The pair were found downtown at the Ayr dam. There were many more “adventures” that will go unsaid here - others involved will recollect with amusement and awe, both here and in Alberta.
“Hockey Night in Canada” was a religion for Bruce and his long time friend Steve, always together for Saturday night – Who could want for anything more – The Leafs, The Oilers and Beer!!
To sum up Bruce's life – Leonard Cohen said it best... “The inner sweetness of the man could not be concealed.”
At Bruce's request there will be no funeral, and any “in memorials” to the charity of your choice, or plant a tree and name it Bruce.
A Memorial Tree was planted for Bruce
