Terry Irwin

Obituary of Terry Irwin

Terence Dermot (Terry) Irwin, 81, of Goderich, ON passed away on March 22, 2021 at home surrounded by family. Terry was born in Barrow-in-Furness, UK on April 6, 1939. He studied mechanical engineering and completed an apprenticeship at the De Havilland Aircraft Company in the UK. In 1969 he emigrated to Canada and began working at the Canadian branch of the De Havilland Aircraft Company in Downsview, ON. He planned and analyzed the engines and related systems, did flight testing, and eventually became chief of the airworthiness division. One of his key accomplishments was designing the engine installation of the Dash 8 – a two-engine turboprop that continues to fly in dozens of countries around the world. Terry’s interests included a great love of the outdoors, cars, English football, following the stock market and, of course, engineering everything that could benefit from improvement. Terry is survived by his wife Jeanette Irwin, daughter Kathryn Dong (Sandy), son Mitch Irwin (Karen), daughter Carmen Armstrong (Matthew) and daughter Nicole Lynch (Phil), as well as his grandkids Thomas, James, Matthew, Ann, Evelyn, William, Henry, Athena, Candace and Aurora. A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to the Huron Residential Hospice or the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada would be greatly appreciated. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the excellent care received by the entire home care team and amazing staff at the Huron Residential Hospice, London Regional Cancer Program, and Alexandra Marine General Hospital.
