Obituary of Jacob Hulzebos

It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Jacob Hulzebos, a much loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Jake died peacefully on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 following a lengthy illness. Cherished husband for 60 years of Renny (nee Haan) Hulzebos. Loving father to Joe (Ann) Hulzebos of Blyth, Effie (Ken) Nesbitt of Mitchell and Kathie (John) Jordan of New Hamburg. Proud Grandpa to Charlene, Jason, Hailie, Krysta (Steve), Jonathan, Mackenzie and Shelbie. Great Grandpa to Amber, Makayla and Chace. Brother and brother-in-law of Kunie of The Netherlands and the late Jan Woltjer, Piea and Hank Drost of Clinton. Also survived by special nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Johan and Aafke Hulzebos, brothers Johan and Harmjan Hulzebos, sister Manna Niebuur and his parents-in-law Jan and Aafke (Devries) Haan. Jake was born in Nieuwe Pekela, The Netherlands on July 16, 1927. At age 17 he joined the Dutch Army, where he spent two and a half years serving in Indonesia. He received the Purple Heart for bravery in 1993, 46 years after he finished his service. In 1949, he fulfilled his dream of coming to Canada to operate his own farm. He loved Canada and was always so grateful he emigrated here. He farmed for 44 years on the Moncreiff Road before retiring to Blyth in 1998. He was a self-taught wood worker and World War II historian. Friends will be received at the Falconer Funeral Homes - Blyth Chapel, 407 Queen Street, Blyth on Sunday, January 19th from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 20, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Blyth Christian Reformed Church, 354 Queen Street, South, Blyth. Spring Interment, Brussels Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to Seaforth Community Hospital.
