“Doug was special. We first met briefly in 1990 at Lighthouse Point in Goderich and had a great conversation about the harbour, my grandfather, 'Charlie' Lee whom he knew, and the Sunset Hotel which Mr. Lee owned. We reconnected in July of this year thanks to Peter Sturdy as I was writing an article on the hotel. As Peter knew Doug had worked at the hotel in 1939, he suggested I speak to him. This I did -- our long conversation was wonderful (Doug worked in the kitchen but didn't much like that and so then worked on the grounds). We talked about his travels, the Grahams, the MacDonalds and the McKays – they always ensured that the best of the catch of fish was reserved for the Sunset. Doug, laughing, also mentioned a friend dating a Toronto high school student hired as a 'mother's helper' to look after we three kids at my grandparent’s home on Cobourg St.
Doug and I hoped to meet again but now, sadly, this won't happen.
Please accept my sincere condolences.

So sorry to learn of Doug's passing. He was always a great neighbour to we kids who used to play "kick the can" in the lot beside the house. He had some great stories of his life at sea and I remember looking forward to hearing a new one whenever he "came off the boats". He will be missed on Picton Street and by those who called him family and friend. God speed, Doug, and my thoughts and prayers go out to all of his remaining family. He was a good, gentle man.

We wish to offer sincere condolences to Angus and other family members of the late D. Doug Graham. His loss is a great loss to our community - especially for the wealth of maritime heritage that was so able to preserve and share.... He was always willing to help clarify a point of local marine history. He was a willing supporter of our 2013 Great Lakes Storm of 1913 Centenary Remembrance and we appreciated his help with various matters of history related to that tragic 1913 event. He was interviewed at that time last year, by a US CBS reporter, Corey Adkins, FOX News 10, who also has conveyed his condolences, and his appreciation for Doug's willingness to share. He will be missed.
