Helen Gowing was a tremendous asset to the Blyth Festival. I remember her during my early days as Artistic director in the 1980's, calm, sensible and supportive. During the crisis in the 90's she welcomed me back to Blyth with a small gift of a coffee cup decorated with cows and filled with jelly beans. I still have it. Again, she saw us through a very difficult year with fearless aplomb. She displayed the same care and hard work as a member of the town council. She was deeply respected and loved by all who knew her and she is greatly missed.
